## The planner in five steps

1. **Enter country, year and PTO days.** Pick your country and planning year and enter how many PTO days you have.
2. **Choose a strategy and focus months.** Choose balanced mix, long weekends, mini breaks, week-long breaks or extended vacations, and optionally the months your time off should go to.
3. **Check public holidays.** Select your state, canton or region so local public holidays are included.
4. **Add company days and weekend days.** Add company shutdown days and set the days you normally have off each week.
5. **Optimize and export.** Run the optimizer, review the breaks and the year calendar, then download the iCal file.

## Example: 20 PTO days, Belgium, 2027

National holidays, Saturday and Sunday weekend.

- Balanced mix: 44 days off in 5 breaks.
- Long weekends: 65 days off in 20 breaks.
- Mini breaks: 41 days off in 8 breaks.
- Week-long breaks: 43 days off in 5 breaks.
- Extended vacations: 40 days off in 4 breaks.
- Single bridge: taking Friday 7 May 2027 after Ascension Thursday gives 4 days off for 1 PTO day.

## How it works

- Every day is either free (weekly day off, public holiday, company day) or a working day. PTO is only ever placed on working days.
- A break is a run of consecutive days off: the PTO days plus every free day touching them. Break length counts all of those days.
- Dynamic programming selects the set of breaks with the most total days off within the PTO budget.
- Every break contains at least one weekend day. PTO is never spent on a loose mid-week run.
- Among plans with equal days off, the one using fewer PTO days wins.
- The whole PTO budget is planned: PTO that does not fit the strategy goes into extra long weekends and then into extra breaks of any length next to a weekend, labelled as such. Days stay unplanned only when no working day is left to book.
- Focus months (optional): with "Prefer these months" the chosen months are planned first with the whole budget and PTO that does not fit goes to the rest of the year; with "Only these months" PTO is booked in those months alone and stays unplanned only when they have no working day left. A break belongs to a month when its PTO days fall in it; the weekend or holiday around it may lie in the next month.

## Strategies

## FAQ

### What is FixMyPTO?

FixMyPTO is a free web tool that plans your paid time off (PTO). It places your leave days next to weekends and public holidays so each day you take turns into a longer break. It works for 21 countries, needs no account and runs in your browser.

### How many days off can I get from 20 PTO days?

In Belgium in 2027, 20 PTO days give 44 days off in 5 breaks with the balanced strategy, 65 days off in 20 long weekends, 41 days off in 8 mini breaks, 43 days off in 5 week-long breaks, or 40 days off in 4 extended vacations. Results differ per country, region and year.

### How does the PTO optimizer work?

Every day of the year is either free (weekend, public holiday, company day) or a working day. A break is a run of consecutive days off. The optimizer uses dynamic programming to pick the combination of breaks with the most days off inside your PTO budget, within the break length and spacing of the strategy you chose.

### Does FixMyPTO ever book PTO on a weekend or public holiday?

No. PTO is only placed on working days. Weekends, public holidays and company days are free days that extend a break. Every break also contains at least one weekend, so leave is never spent on a loose mid-week run.

### Which countries does FixMyPTO support?

Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, including more than 150 states, cantons, provinces and regions.

### Can I use it if my weekend is not Saturday and Sunday?

Yes. Choose the days you normally have off each week, from one to six days. The optimizer treats those days as your weekend and never books PTO on them.

### What happens if I have more PTO than the plan can use?

All your PTO days are planned. PTO that does not fit the chosen strategy goes into extra long weekends and, if needed, extra breaks next to a weekend, clearly labelled. Every PTO day still adds a day off. Days are only reported as unplanned when no working day is left to book.

### Can I export my vacation plan?

Yes. Download an iCal (.ics) file that opens in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and Outlook, print the plan, or copy a ready-made out-of-office message for every break.

### Is my data stored?

No. The plan is calculated in your browser and is not sent to a server. Only the country and year are requested from the public holiday service Nager.Date. Analytics run only if you consent.

### Is FixMyPTO available in other languages?

The site is written in English. The language menu can show it in 30 other languages, including Dutch, French, German, Spanish and Italian, using Google Translate. The translation is automatic; nothing is sent to Google until you choose a language.

### Is FixMyPTO free?

Yes. FixMyPTO is free to use and needs no account or sign-up.

## For AI agents

FixMyPTO has no server API: the plan is calculated in the page. In a browser with WebMCP (https://webmachinelearning.github.io/webmcp/) the page at https://fixmypto.com/ offers four tools:

- `get_planner_options` (read-only): country codes, planning years, strategies and limits.
- `get_public_holidays` (read-only): public holidays for `country`, `year` and an optional `region`.
- `plan_pto`: `country`, `year`, `ptoDays`, optional `strategy` (`balanced`, `long-weekends`, `mini-breaks`, `week-long`, `extended`), `region`, `weekendDays`, `focusMonths` (month numbers 1-12) and `focusMode` (`prefer` or `only`). Shows the plan on the page and returns it as JSON with the dates to book.
- `add_company_day`: `date` (YYYY-MM-DD, inside the planning year), optional `name`. The day counts as free in the next plan.

Without WebMCP, use the planner on the page; every control has a label.
